Electricity was once one of the highest costs on the profit and loss statement of Bowhill Engineering. However, since discovering an innovative new tool, that is starting to change.

Bowhill Engineering, a South Australian-owned and managed company, specialises in the fabrication of heavy and complex structural steel.

Their services span from design optimisation to installation.

To reduce costs and meet their internal energy efficiency targets, Bowhill turned to the Sustainable Energy Commitment, an energy management system and program tailored for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The software, developed in South Australia, supports businesses through the three key pillars of energy transition: strategy, climate disclosure reporting, and execution management.

Businesses participating in the program work with an energy transition consultant, supported by a powerful digital platform and a cost structure designed specifically for SMEs.

Before approaching the Sustainable Energy Commitment, Bowhill Engineering lacked internal expertise in energy and sustainability. They struggled to navigate the confusing landscape of energy solutions and find a clear path forward.

As a supplier, Bowhill was also starting to field questions from customers about their sustainability practices. Rather than seeing this as a problem, the innovative company viewed it as an opportunity.

After committing to the Sustainable Energy Commitment, Bowhill has achieved significant milestones. They have met an energy transition score of 30, reduced energy costs by more than 15%, and cut energy usage by over 11%.

Jodie Hawkes, CEO of Bowhill Engineering, said, The outcomes of our Sustainable Energy Commitment have been humongous. I love the outward-facing portal that shows us and our customers where we started, where we are now, and where we want to be.”

Bowhill Engineering has never looked back since joining the Sustainable Energy Commitment and is well on track to meet its 2028 target.

Due to their progress, Bowhill Engineering is now getting industry recognition for their sustainability development, as they were recently short-listed for the Steel Sustainability Awards.
