Why Australia's workforce challenge requires a new approach

Across Australia, businesses are facing a common challenge: finding and retaining the people they need to grow.

While skills shortages continue to dominate workforce discussions, focusing solely on the shortage itself risks overlooking a larger issue. The real challenge may not be a lack of talent, but a reliance on traditional recruitment pathways that no longer reflect today’s labour market.

For many employers, recruitment strategies continue to target the same candidate pools, using the same methods, while competing for a shrinking supply of workers. In this environment, businesses that succeed will be those willing to rethink where talent comes from and how it is developed.

One of the most underutilised talent pools in Australia remains people living with disabilities. Despite bringing valuable skills, perspectives and capabilities, many continue to face barriers to employment unrelated to their ability to succeed in a role.

Research consistently shows that diverse workforces contribute to stronger innovation, improved problem-solving and greater workforce resilience. Yet many recruitment processes still unintentionally exclude capable candidates through outdated assumptions about experience, flexibility or workplace requirements.

At Jobedge, we see disability inclusion not simply as a social responsibility initiative, but as a workforce strategy. Inclusive employers are often better positioned to address labour shortages, strengthen workplace culture and access talent that may otherwise be overlooked.

This belief underpins Future Ready Focus, a fully-funded program being delivered in Adelaide’s north. The initiative supports young people with disabilities to build the confidence, skills and workplace readiness needed for meaningful employment, while strengthening connections between employers and emerging talent.

Participants undertake accredited training, workplace wellbeing programs, industry-focused learning and practical work experience that helps prepare them for long-term workforce participation. Developed in collaboration with industry, the program focuses on the practical capabilities, confidence and workplace behaviours employers identify as critical for long-term success.

However, creating sustainable employment outcomes requires more than preparing job seekers. It also requires workplaces equipped to attract, support and retain diverse talent.

To help achieve this, participating employers gain access to Shaping Impact, Jobedge’s disability inclusion training program, at no cost.

Designed in partnership with Suzanne Colbert AM, Shaping Impact is a four-hour face-to-face training program that builds confidence in recruiting, onboarding and supporting people with disabilities. The program explores inclusive recruitment practices, workplace adjustments, accessibility, and strategies for creating welcoming workplace cultures where all employees can thrive.

By strengthening understanding of disability inclusion and its business benefits, Shaping Impact helps organisations improve their capability to support diverse employees and maximise workforce success.

The most successful organisations of the future will not simply compete harder for talent. They will think differently about how talent is identified, nurtured and supported.

As workforce pressures continue to challenge industries across South Australia, the opportunity for employers is clear. By embracing inclusive recruitment and investing in new talent pathways, businesses can strengthen their workforce while helping create more accessible and prosperous communities.

The future workforce already exists. The challenge is whether we are prepared to recognise its full potential.
