For SMEs yet to adopt AI, the journey really begins with three focused stages.
1. Identify Opportunities
Start by examining your business for repetitive, time-consuming tasks, areas prone to human error or delays. These often hide the greatest potential for automation and value creation. Whether it’s routine data entry, manual approvals or delay-laden handoffs, spotting these bottlenecks is your first step toward meaningful change.
2. Prepare Before You Adopt
Before introducing any AI or automation solution, ensure your data is well-organised. That means consistent storage, easy accessibility, high accuracy and strong reliability. Define clearly what you want automation to achieve, who will own it, and how you’ll govern usage. At the same time consider confidentiality, compliance and regulatory requirements — skipping these foundational elements risks failure.
3. Assess Your AI Readiness
Ask: how well documented are your key processes? Do you know the value each process delivers? The more clearly a process is defined and understood, the smoother automation will be. A well-structured process with a known outcome is ripe for AI-enabled automation delivering measurable impact.
