On Monday, the Premier announced that South Australia will formally bid to host the COP31 climate change conference in November 2026. The South Australian Business Chamber has advocated for South Australia to make a COP bid ahead of 2022 state election and sought a feasibility study as part of its 2023/24 pre-budget submission.
COP, the Conference of the Parties, brings together representatives of 197 nations and is the supreme climate change decision-making body for the United Nations.
With our global leadership in renewable energy, a unique natural environment and world class conference track record, we are the logical choice for a future Australian COP.
Lasting around 11 days, the conference expects to attract over 30,000 visitors to the city with an estimated economic benefit topping $500 million as business travellers typically spending four times more than leisure tourists.
With over 10,000 hotel rooms available in the Adelaide CBD and a scientific and cultural boulevard on North Terrace running from SAHMRI to the Botanic Gardens, Adelaide is well suited to host a conference of the scale of COP31.
Hosting COP31 will put Adelaide and SA on the global map as a world leader in renewable energy and decarbonisation and promote the significant investment opportunities and tourism experiences available across our state.
