Promote yourself without being a jerk

Tuesday, October 11th 2022

One of our program graduates recently told me their biggest takeaway was that they had a story to tell and should share it. That got me thinking about self-promotion …. As someone who is not in the habit of pushing themselves in front of the masses, I started exploring the ways that you can promote yourself in a natural but not excessive way. Here is what I came up with (specifically noting point four):

  1. Avoid the LinkedIn humble brag… as a long-time user and supporter of LinkedIn as a business social network, I’ve seen it change. Perhaps I’ve been guilty of this in the past? Perhaps people are genuinely humbled’ to have had their success? But stop it. Please. If you are proud, say it: you worked hard and deserve recognition.
  2. Once you have genuinely shared a success, you are proud of, graciously accept the compliments. Even if you blush, take a moment to absorb what has been said and thank that person for taking the time to acknowledge what is truly important to you.
  3. Contribute to the conversation … by sharing your knowledge in an open forum, you expand the knowledge of those around you and sub-consciously communicate your expertise in this area.
  4. In a world where we are inundated with information (and have rapidly decreasing attention spans), be a refreshingly easy person to communicate with. The same goes for your organisation, make every interaction with your clients and customers count because it goes to the heart of what you stand for.
  5. Above all, let your work speak for itself.
