In this new section, we introduce the people behind the star, who work every day to support our members. Get to know our team and learn how they help local businesses like yours succeed.

This month, we introduce a member of our Policy & Advocacy team, Cathi Buttfield.

Q1. Tell us a little about yourself and your role at the Chamber
A. I’m a Senior Policy Adviser in the Chamber’s Policy and Advocacy Team. My background spans 22 years of public service across state and federal government, working in private enterprise, and running my own small businesses in hospitality and manufacturing. I understand how challenging and rewarding business can be, and I’m particularly passionate about helping SA businesses grow and succeed.

Q2. What do you enjoy most about your role?
A
. I enjoy working with members and hearing directly about what’s happening in their businesses. It’s rewarding to help turn those insights into practical advocacy that can make a difference.

Q3. How do our policy & advocacy efforts support businesses?
A.
We listen to businesses, identify common issues, and provide practical solutions to the government. We also review proposed legislation and sit on key committees to ensure SA businesses, especially those whose voices may not always be heard, are represented locally and nationally. On any given day, my work can cover topics from AI to the Algal Bloom, Energy to the Middle East conflict, Procurement to Red, White and Green Tape, or any other issues and opportunities for SA businesses.

Q4. How does member feedback shape this work?
A
. Member feedback is essential. It helps us understand the real pressures businesses are facing and ensures our advocacy is based on practical, on-the-ground experience. Our recent Fuel Survey, which received more than 800 responses in 48 hours, helped inform discussions with state and federal decision-makers on the key pressure points for SA businesses.

Q5. How can members get involved or have their voice heard?
A
. Members can complete surveys, take part in consultations, attend events, provide case studies, or contact our Policy Team directly. Every conversation helps strengthen our advocacy and make sure the voice of SA businesses is heard.
