Lifeline celebrates 60 Years of Hope in 2023

At 5pm on 16 March 1963, Lifeline opened its telephone lines for the first time.

Since that day, 60 years ago, its incredible volunteers from across Australia have kept the lines of Lifeline open every hour of every day, allowing the service to deliver on its mission to support Australians in times of crisis.

On 11 August 1963, Lifeline Adelaide was the second centre to open in Australia.

Lifeline celebrates these important milestones this month, reflecting on the fundamental part the Adelaide-based centre has played in answering 23 million calls for help nationwide.

Lifeline has stood behind many South Australians in their most difficult time, providing support and hope.

As a registered charity and a service of the not-for-profit group Uniting Communities, donations are crucial to ensuring this important service which has improved and saved the lives of thousands of South Australians, remains sustainable and viable.

Lifeline has launched a 60 for Sixty campaign, encouraging South Australians who are able to donate to help raise $60,000 for the service in celebration of their 60 years of operation this weekend.

To reach this milestone, the charity only needs 1000 South Australians to spare $60 to help them continue to answer these life-saving calls.

Somewhere in Australia, a lifeline operator receives a call for help every sixty seconds.

If you can, please donate today.
