Sure, it is cold outside. Our friends in the northern hemisphere have a much nicer time celebrating International Bike Week. But there is no time like the present to get yourself out of the office and onto the bike.
These last few years have seen much change, many people took up cycling or rediscovered it, dusting off that old bike sitting in the shed to get out there again. Some for exercise, some for commuting to work, going to the shops, or even just to see friends and family.
The bike can give everyone freedom to choose how to travel and live their lives better and healthier. But in our current cold conditions, you’ll want to rug up. As your body struggles to stay warm in the cold, you not only burn more calories, but your body also learns to use oxygen much more efficiently.
The South Australian Business Chamber member Cycle Closet knows how to keep you warm when you hit the roads on two wheels instead of four.
Owner Julian says there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong kit for the wrong conditions.
“We definitely don’t want riders to go into conditions they feel unsafe but if they want to ride, the right apparel will make riding a whole lot more comfortable. At Cycle Closet we have cycle specific apparel for commuters right through to those that want to ride for several hours in all conditions.
Some tips to keep you warm is that the right clothing and plenty of layers will keep your core and extremities warm.
“Just remember, you will be cold at first. If you’re warm when you get outside ready to ride, then you have too much clothing on.
“And one trick to keep your fingers warmer is to wear a pair of low cost merino liner gloves that will improve the thermal capability of your existing gloves.
“Lastly, a wind and water resistant jacket or shell makes a massive difference, keeping that wind out is key.
“I ride at least four times a week and I regularly commute. As a car driver as well I am conscious of being seen by car drivers. I stick to bike paths or lanes and I always have a bright helmet, bright jacket or outside layer and bright flashing lights front or rear.
“Enjoy riding, it is healthy, low cost and on a micro level really does make a difference to the environment.”
