The South Australian Government has launched another crackdown on the illegal sale of vapes and tobacco.

In a pre-budget announcement on Wednesday, the Premier allocated $16 million over the next four years to be spent on a further 20 compliance officers to crack down on businesses and individuals selling illegal vape and tobacco products.

If you are breaking the law with impunity, selling chop-chop, selling illegal cigarettes, tobacco, vapes, we’re coming after you”, said the Premier.

Last year, the government announced changes to the Tobacco and E‑Cigarettes Products Act 1997 that made the sale of e‑cigarettes that contain nicotine illegal.

From 1 March 2024, new laws in South Australia banned smoking and vaping in various public outdoor areas.

The sale and supply of e‑cigarette and tobacco products are regulated by the Tobacco and E‑Cigarette Act 1997.

Any licensed retailer found to breach the conditions risks penalties of up to $10,000.

Any person or retailer found selling or supplying e‑cigarette products or tobacco without a license faces penalties of up to $20,000.
