The South Australian Business Chamber CEO Andrew Kay will join an impressive list of well-known South Australians this Saturday to lift the lid on homelessness during a live art installation in Rundle Mall.

Artist Andrew Baines and community services organisation Lutheran Care are the masterminds behind Saturday’s event, titled Behind the Guise of Homelessness, which aims to shine a light on the issues of homelessness and disadvantage.

Andrew Kay, alongside the Hon Nat Cook MP, Erin Phillips, Heather Croall, Bruce Djite, Uncle Mickey O’Brien and Mark Soda’ Soderstrom will participate in the event, with organisers remaining tight-lipped about what exactly the installation entails.

We do know that everyone involved in the installation will represent approximately 1000 people in South Australia who are currently experiencing homelessness, and that Lutheran Care intends to raise funds to continue to provide their vital services through this initiative.

Lutheran Care hopes to raise awareness of the current emergency state of homelessness in South Australia and make the issue impossible for the community to ignore.

Andrew was very happy to donate his time, noting that the impact of rising rental prices and housing shortages over the past few years have made it more difficult than ever to house the homeless.

Homelessness in South Australia is on the rise. We are only now starting to identify the true extent of the issue, which reaches far beyond those sleeping rough”.

There is a vast spectrum of homeless people in Adelaide, and it is rarely, if ever, a personal choice. We can be too quick to associate the homeless with issues such as substance abuse or mental illness, when in reality they may well be business owners or workers that have suffered misfortune and simply fallen on tough times”, Mr Kay added.

Lutheran Care is a not-for-profit organisation that changes lives and builds communities in SA and NT. For more information on the services they offer, or to make a donation to their many fantastic initiatives visit lutherancare.org.au
