The South Australian Business Chamber Today

Businesses boom to celebrate Mum

Thursday, May 5th 2022

Many South Australians will take part in the usual custom of celebrating their Mum on Sunday. This celebration maybe a phone call, a card, a lunch or a hug and it might be for your biological, adopted, foster, or any other connection that resonates with Mum’.

Starting in the early 1900s, Mother’s Day was born from the (fairly obvious) desire to honour mothers. From its American origins, it is now celebrated annually in over 40 countries and ranges in timing from February to December, sometimes on a specific date, sometimes on the first, second, third or fourth Sunday.

While the date may be different, the respect for the role of the mother in the family unit and across the community is consistent.

After a tough couple of years due to the global pandemic, 2022 Mother’s Day is an opportunity to get out and celebrate your Mum.

Purple Giraffe owner, the South Australian Business Chamber member, and mother of one Lynda Schenk says that sometimes you simply have to have the discipline to switch off.

You just have to let your family spoil you rotten … well, one can always hope!”

The South Australian Business Chamber Manager, Entrepreneur and first-time expectant mother Jade Henschke is looking forward to meeting her sweet little boy very soon.

Mother’s Day to me is a celebration of a journey, and I cannot wait to celebrate mine very soon. When I return to work, the next challenge for me is juggling the family that I love with the work that rewards me so much.

We should all remember that we are not Superwoman and to not put so much pressure on ourselves.”

Here at the South Australian Business Chamber, we have many members doing amazing things and members whose livelihoods are changed by this celebration.

Tonysflower’s General Manager and the South Australian Business Chamber member Michael Vallelonga says Mother’s Day is the most important day of the year for a florist, and this year even more so given the hardship COVID has caused for small businesses.

Our wholesale flower sales will see a month’s trade in just a couple of days.

Like most businesses, we’ve really struggled with staff out due to having COVID-19 or being close contacts. Our team have been incredible during this time, really stepping up to cover the roster.

With the recent removal of the close contact rules, we’re looking forward to getting back to business-as-usual.

If you want to keep your flowers a little longer, don’t forget to cut the flower stems and refresh the water daily.”

Are you looking for ideas for Mother’s Day? the South Australian Business Chamber members have plenty of options for you to consider.

How about floral cupcakes and doughnuts on Mother’s Day from Bakery on O’Connell? Or a Mother’s Day Gin High Tea with Prohibition Liquor Co? Or Mother’s Day brunch at Sparkke at the Whitmore? Or something amongst the animals at the Adelaide Zoo? Or get a medium coffee and slice of cake for $10 from Let Them Eat?

The Flower Nook are delivering all over Adelaide on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And Alyssiums on Pirie are taking orders now.
