ACCI 1200x850

As Parliament returns for the first time this year, it could well be the last sitting fortnight before an election is called. With the next sitting week not scheduled until March 25, critical decisions affecting small businesses and energy policy are at stake.

The South Australian Business Chamber, working closely with the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) on national business advocacy, supports ACCI’s call for the government to take decisive action by reintroducing and passing legislation to extend the small business instant asset write-off for the 2024 – 25 fiscal year. Disappointingly, this crucial measure has been attached to an omnibus bill, making its passage uncertain due to the inclusion of other provisions that may not gain Senate approval.

ACCI is actively addressing the challenges posed by rising energy costs, supply reliability, and the government’s ambitious renewable energy targets. While supporting the transition to cleaner energy, ACCI emphasizes the crucial role of natural gas in maintaining a stable and affordable energy supply. Given Australia’s significant gas reserves, it is concerning that policy decisions have led to potential shortages and even the prospect of gas imports. To prevent further energy insecurity, ACCI advocates for continued natural gas exploration and production, until alternative forms of energy are developed and scaled up to the point of being economically viable. This is alongside the development of carbon capture and storage technologies, ensuring a balanced and pragmatic approach to the nation’s energy future.

The South Australian Business Chamber remains committed to working with ACCI to champion the needs of businesses at the national level. As Federal Parliament deliberates these pressing matters, our collective advocacy efforts will continue to focus on securing practical policies that support small businesses and ensure a sustainable energy future for Australia.
