Use of step ladders

Useladder

Unfortunately, there have been several falls from step ladders over the past few months. Any fall from height can cause injuries and devastating outcomes to the person and the PCBU. There are several different ladders out on the market, and one-size-fits-all is not the case. You should choose the correct ladder for each job and ensure it is suitable for the task. You should also consider if there is a better and safer alternative than using a ladder.

Below are some considerations if you intend to use a ladder as part of your daily tasks.

Positioning

  • conduct a risk assessment
  • ensure that the ladder has a 1:4 pitch (one out, four up)
  • does the ladder extend over the landing? At least 1 metre
  • is it on a suitable and stable surface?
  • can the ladder be knocked over?
  • is it close to a doorway or around a blind spot?
  • has signage been erected, or a person placed to guard the footings of the ladder?

Safe Use

  • one person at a time on the ladder
  • three points of contact always
  • climb up and down facing the ladder
  • always remain centred
  • do not work above the safe height of the ladder
  • check ladder to ensure that it is fit for purpose

Inspections of ladders

Ask yourself:

  • has this ladder been checked regularly and serviced by a competent person?
  • does this ladder match the environment I am using it in?
  • do I need a non-conductive ladder if work in or near electricity
