The South Australian Business Chamber Today

The do's and don'ts of performance management

Wednesday, May 11th 2022

As managers, leaders, and business owners, we have all experienced an employee issue or an employee who is just not performing.

When this occurs, we need to address the issue or poor performance with the employee and avoid any negative impacts on other employees. We also need to ensure we handle the process correctly. It will be under scrutiny if we are required to defend an unfair dismissal claim in the Fair Work Commission.

The South Australian Business Chamber recognises that this is a hot topic for employers in the current climate. Performance management and employment termination are among the top five questions received by our Business Advice Hotline.

Come and hear from our resident Industrial Relations experts and lawyers, Kathryn Rees and Lisa Casella. Kathryn and Lisa will discuss how to avoid costly claims by outlining:

  • what to do and not to do when issuing warnings
  • myths about warnings
  • developing your performance management procedure
  • employee vs employer termination of employment
  • unfair dismissal and other claims
  • what happens when a claim is lodged
