Just as RAA’s early success was founded on motorists seeking safe and accessible distance driving, the State’s largest membership organisation is now solving the new age of ‘range anxiety’ to enhance the take-up of electric vehicles in South Australia.
In case you missed the announcement earlier this year, the South Australian Business Chamber member RAA has been entrusted with a $12.4m South Australian government grant to create the first state border-to-border electric vehicle charging network right here in SA.
Starting later this year, RAA will be installing more than 530 EV charging points at 140 charging sites for South Australia’s EV charging network, with more than 75% of these to be located in regional parts of our State.
Outgoing RAA Managing Director Ian Stone said the announcement was a landmark moment in the transition to electric vehicles.
“RAA believes EVs are the future of motoring, and our research shows almost 80 per cent of motorists would consider buying an electric vehicle,” Mr Stone said.
“The maximum distance between charging points will be around 250km – well within the range of a typical EV car battery.
“We know that drivers’ enthusiasm for EVs is curbed by the availability of charging points, so this new network will go a long way to allaying that range anxiety.”
RAA is well advanced in its site scoping works for the EV infrastructure with a view to installing the first charging site around September.
