Payroll tax exemption for bulk billing G Ps

The South Australian government recently passed legislation to introduce a payroll tax exemption on wages paid, whether employed or contracted, to General Practitioners (GPs) who provide at least some of their services through bulk billing. This exemption will be ongoing and starts from 1 July 2024.

RevenueSA says it’s important for medical practices to assess their potential payroll tax liability from 1 July 2024 and invites all those concerned to attend the webinar and monitor their website for ongoing developments.

RevenueSA is working to implement these new arrangements in time for the annual payroll tax reconciliation process, which will commence in mid-June 2025.

Medical practices that engage GPs in this fashion, as well as accountants or lawyers whose clients may be affected, are recommended to attend a webinar held by RevenueSA to explain the changes and help ensure compliance. This will take place at 7PM on Wednesday 4 June with an opportunity to ask questions during the session.
