The release of Health and Safety Representative (HSR) training online is proving to be a popular format with HSR’s keen to take up the opportunity of upskilling from the comfort of their homes or regional workspaces.
The transition from the traditional face to face training and moving online has been a challenging and rewarding opportunity for our facilitator Michael Hall.
Michael brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his role in delivering HSR Year 1, 2, 3 and Refresher training, as well as a range of other WHS programs including Managing WHS in the Workplace which the South Australian Business Chamber is also delivering online.
Michael has spent the last 10 years working for international mining company Foraco as a WHS supervisor, managing the company’s WHS systems, policies and procedures and liaising with clients across Queensland and New South Wales.
His key experience include promoting a WHS environment with development of training policies, hazard and risk management, investigating HSE incidents, liaising with clients and supervisors concerning safety and operational issues, conducting audits and inspections of equipment to ensure compliance, and conducting safety reviews.
Michael comes highly qualified with a string of qualifications including a Bachelor of Business, Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety and a Diploma of Quality Auditing.
Michael is passionate about safety and making sure workers are safe, and this comes through in the delivery and interaction with participants in his training sessions.
“If the workers are happy and safe, they’re productive too. Employees are our number one asset and we need to look after them.”
Michael says HSRs play an extremely important role because they represent the workers, acting on their behalf with any safety concerns.
The South Australian Business Chamber is here to support HSRs through training and advice and Michael’s top tip for HSRs is; “when in doubt — ask.”
“If you’re not sure, check the legislation – and if you’re not sure how to read it or you have any questions, call the South Australian Business Chamber or SafeWork SA and ask for advice.”
Outside of work, Michael loves spending time with his six year old son Oliver. Their favourite thing to do together is to cook muffins — “using plastic knives of course.” It seems safety is always on his mind.
