More single-use plastic items have been banned under the South Australian Government’s ‘Replace the Waste’ scheme, impacting some packaging that may be used in businesses.
The latest items to be banned, as part of a five-year plan to eliminate single-use plastics in South Australia, are:
The ‘Replace the Waste’ initiative recognises the global efforts to phase out single-use plastics, as an important and achievable step in striving to reduce pollution, cut carbon emissions and protect marine life.
South Australia has taken steps to address the impacts associated with a range of single-use and other plastic products and was the first jurisdiction in Australia to do so on a statewide basis. Other states and territories have since followed South Australia’s lead.
The Hon Susan Close MP, Deputy Premier and Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science says many South Australian businesses have already moved away from single-use items and are embracing reusable and compostable items.
“South Australians are increasingly looking at ways to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics which devastate our environment.
“The State Government will continue to assist South Australian businesses via various programs to assist them transition.” said Minister Close.
Businesses should continue to phase out the use of single-use plastics and seek sustainable alternative products ahead of future changes.
