More hours, more choice – Shop Trading Hours Act extension and additional trading

Thursday, October 27th 2022

Good news for our members, the broader South Australian business community, and South Australian shoppers. The South Australian Business Chamber is pleased to see the Malinauskas Government’s amendments to the Shop Trading Hours Act 1977 pass as they strike the right balance for workers, large and small business owners, and shoppers. This will come into effect on 1 November 2022, and the first date with extended 9am Sunday trading will be Sunday 6 November.

The South Australian Business Chamber General Manager, Policy, Advocacy and International Services Kendall Crowe is glad that businesses have the choice to trade longer following long-term negotiations with the Government on this issue.

South Australia has a unique mix of businesses in the retail sector that drives innovation in turn supporting local producers and manufacturers.

These reforms will allow South Australians to shop from 9am on Sundays, instead of waiting until 11am.

The amended legislation also tightens the ministerial powers to grant exemptions to the Act, which should assist with more certainty for businesses.

As always, we are proud to go into fight for what our members and the broader business community needs. In this instance, the Premier has recognised this in the final throes of the parliamentary debate. We called for a fix to the issue of shops being shut for an extended period when a public holiday (eg Christmas Day) falls on a weekend. We are pleased to see this amendment included.

We support the Government’s plans to gazette midnight trading dates as Thursday 15 December, Thursday 22 December, and Friday 23 December. This means increased trade for businesses in the Christmas/New Year period.”
