They say laughter is the best medicine, which is why the services provided by organisations such as the Starlight Children’s Foundation are so important. Based at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital at North Adelaide, the non-profit organisation has been brightening the lives of seriously ill children and their families with fun and laughter for 30 years.
While doctors treat a child’s illness, the Starlight Children’s Foundation focuses on distracting them from the pain and fear associated with prolonged hospital stays through key services such as the Starlight Room, Starlight Captains and Starlight Wishes.
The Starlight Room is a treatment-free zone within the Women’s and Children’s Hospital where children can forget about their illness and just be kids. Led by its Starlight Captains, the unsung heroes of the hospital, children and their families can take a break and enjoy interactive games, crafts, dancing and more. And for those kids too sick to leave their beds, the Starlight Children’s Foundation provides a dedicated video channel, or its Starlight Captains go to them.
If your child is ever confronted with a serious illness and long hospital stint, you’ll be thanking your lucky stars for the Starlight Children’s Foundation. Find out more in this week’s member profile video featuring Monique Littlejohn, Starlight Children’s Foundation State Partnerships Manager:
