He’s the local Kenny – or at least he gets called Kenny more often than not – and he’s Port Lincoln’s answer to the empathetic and passionate waste removalist in the movie of the same name.
Andrew Foster and his wife Carmen and their two kids, run Local Liquid Waste Removal, specialising in Council Community Waste Water Management Schemes. They can also help you with septics, trade waste, grease traps and commercial kitchen oils, hydrovac (non-destructive digging) and flood mitigation.
Andrew, a former wheat and sheep farmer, skipper, miner, farrier, abalone farmer and several other things, moved into the city (Port Lincoln is a big enough smoke for him) with his wife 10 years ago. He started working in waste removal around that time. An opportunity arose to start their own business about five years later, and he hasn’t looked back since. Though he most often has to look down.
He’s used to the smell, and he goes by the adage that “shit happens” in his industry. And that’s why he’s not afraid to decorate his ute with his business logo and to be polite, shapes that resemble the top of an ice cream cone, but are definitely NOT.
The Local Liquid team is always busy, whether it be draining grease traps from local kitchens and factories to emptying forgotten septic tanks or driving loads of waste to Adelaide for disposal. It’s a costly business too – with fuel costs a major concern, along with the costs of dumping trade waste materials at designated sites 700km away.
Despite their business challenges, Andrew says the best thing about working in a regional area is the community spirit, and the ability to be able to work with other local businesses “to get shit done” when needed.
