Most South Australians would recognise the row of Victorian terraced houses which hug the corner of Pulteney and Carrington streets in the city, but do you know their story?
Carrington Cottages, a non-profit organisation, has been providing accommodation and support for homeless men for 30 years. The cottages sleep up to 60 men – mainly in their 40s and 50s — who stay until they’re back on their feet again.
Demand for the Adelaide men’s shelter is in overdrive this winter with dozens waiting for a bed every night.
Carrington Cottages, led by general manager Shaunee Fox, also offers support services such as transport to and from medical and welfare appointments and activities such as makeover days, which help men rebuild their skills and confidence.
Carrington Cottages also receives social support from the State Government’s Street to Home service, Hutt Street Centre’s Aspire Program and medical assistance from RDNS and Batistcare.
These services combine to help the men rebuild their lives and return to the community and into long-term housing provided by not-for-profit organisations such as Junction, Anglicare, Housing Choices and the South Australian Housing Authority.
