Can You Imagine Facing Your Fear of Needles Three Times Every Week?

There are 25,000 Australians living with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD)*. This is a life-long condition. Patients often experience poor quality of life and if a kidney transplant is not an option, they undergo dialysis multiple times per week, often for many years. The statistics around needle fear are devastating.

Research by the RAH Research Fund has shown 71% have difficulty with needles in the first six weeks of dialysis,**and nearly 40% have fear of needles***. This is the reality for more than 10,000 people receiving haemodialysis for ESKD in Australia*. At least six large-bore needles per week are put in their arm – 312 needle insertions per year. Needles are approximately 3mm x 25 – 38mm, much larger than standard needles used for taking blood. Needles are a way of life for Australians living with kidney disease; a part of life-saving treatment. But this is especially difficult for those with a fear of needles. That’s what talented researcher, Associate Professor Shilpa Jesudason, wants to change, through the INJECT Study – a research program aimed to reduce the fear of needles.

INJECT will develop, trial and evaluate an intervention to measure and help patients manage needle fear and help nurses support patients. The project represents a major advance in addressing needle distress, empowering patients and providing support for self-management,” said Associate Professor Jesudason.

New Business to Provide Care for Lost Loved Ones with Online Memorial

A group of Adelaide businesses have teamed up to ensure families can continue to attend funeral services despite strict Australia-wide border restrictions, launching a new online memorial service. The South Australian Business Chamber is proud to support new members, Adelaide Online Memorials, and commend them on this innovative new business model providing important care for families grieving the loss of a loved one.

Adelaide funeral celebrant, Trevor Hayley, joined funeral director Deanne Edwards, and local production company, Digi Flix, to launch Adelaide Memorials Online in just four weeks.

Mr Hayley said the group wanted to provide an online memorial platform solution for families following the disruption to regular funeral services amid COVID-19 restrictions.

The world has shifted, and with these changes, the way the rituals, celebrations and gatherings have also changed,” said Mr Hayley.

COVID-19 has meant people are nervous about gathering in large groups close together so we provide options where people can remember their loved one and their service without suffering anxiety about COVID-19.

We truly believe, a sincere, warm and personalised memorial is still possible. It is within this new environment, Adelaide Memorials Online was born.

Providing a memorial service is an important part of the grief journey. Having an online service means this important journey can continue.”

While restrictions on funerals in South Australia have been lifted to 30 attendees outdoors, there is ongoing uncertainty around when these will be lifted and what the future holds for larger funerals.

There is also the issue of SA’s border controls and people from interstate being unable to attend funerals in person due to quarantine requirements.

Adelaide Memorials Online hope they can provide care for families in their most difficult time in this new world.

With access to our fully equipped studio, Adelaide Memorials Online offers an online memorial service, either live steamed or pre-recorded in a location of choice.
It is backed by a full Funeral Director service, who will arrange for the care, preparation, and cremation of a loved one, giving them the ultimate respect they deserve while providing families with peace of mind.
