The comprehensive webinar, supported by Employers Mutual Limited, acknowledged the pandemic’s undeniable disruption of the South Australian business community and our everyday lives. Disruption of this extent is likely to trigger feelings of fear, uncertainty and loss. The Webinar’s panel of experts spoke of the importance of taking action early to secure the best possible position for yourself both mentally and financially. The panellists also encouraged viewers to speak openly about their concerns for the future to mitigate anxiety build-up.

Furthermore, the panellists urged viewers to make time for self-care using a regular routine. This could involve taking a walk, a bath, listening to music and so on to help relax after a busy day. Additionally, being selective in one’s media consumption will also go a long way in retaining a healthy mental state. The panel advised sticking to one to two trusted sources of news media to prevent information overload. Maintaining a balanced life in the wake of global disruption will help to ensure a sense of normality and re-store some order to daily life while on lock down.

Business owners and managers can also minimise the negative mental health impacts on their staff using regular communication and by defining clear, flexible expectations. It is also recommended to let staff know of your availability should they need to discuss their concerns. During this time, it is important for employers and staff to maintain reciprocal empathy towards each other.

The mental health of both business owners and staff is likely to diminish during this pandemic but it is important to remember that this will pass.

The South Australian Business Chamber is providing support to both members and non-members during this challenging time. For more information, head to our dedicated COVID-19 support page here or call our Business Advice Hotline on (08) 8300 0000.
