The South Australian Business Chamber Today

Keeping Your Data Safe

The South Australian Business Chamber has recently worked with Crime Stoppers to produce a report on the impacts of crime on business, the frequency with which it happens, and the most prevalent crimes. Highlighted in the report is growing numbers of cyber crimes committed in South Australian businesses. Cyber crime also rated as highest concern for businesses with owners left unsure how to protect themselves. With increasing reliance on digitalised systems of data management, the time has come to safeguard your business and customers data.

Greg Starkey of CQR shares his cyber security tips to help safeguard your business from cyber crime.

  1. Has your email been comprised in a past data breach? Go to this site and enter your email address. If was part of a past breach good time to change your passwords.
  2. COVID-19 has seen a massive increase in cyber criminals launching phishing attacks. Do not click on links or documents in COVID-19 emails. Use your browser to go to the trusted sources such as the Federal Health Department.
  3. There has been some notable successful ransomware attacks in South Australia recently. Make sure you backup your critical data today and store it in a cloud service or offline backup. Remember to test your backups work, download to another secure PC or connect to the cloud service through your browser to check you can access the files.
  4. The best way to protect your email account is to turn on multifactor authentication, for example a passcode to your mobile as the second factor. Check with your provider on what they offer. If it is not available you should move your email to a more secure service. Without secure email you are putting your business and maybe your clients at risk. To get secure is worth the extra few dollars per week.
