A recent police search uncovered more than 154 tonnes of illegal fireworks in three large shipping containers.

SafeWork SA were called to take control, seize the contents of the shipping containers and transport them to a safe location. The fireworks were being store in an area close to businesses, employees and others who they considered were being put under risk of injury.

Under Work Health and Safety legislation, those who own or work with fireworks are required to hold the required licences. This comes as the safety risks that are associated with fireworks include burns, damage to vision, and property or hearing damage, and are well known.

During this festival season, this is a timely reminder that if you are planning to have fireworks (even as an individual) you must ensure that you comply with all applicable statutory requirements in protecting everyone attending an event.
