Fitness Improves Work Performance

Most of us are so swamped with work and family commitments that finding time for physical activity can be challenging. Maintaining an active lifestyle can lead to a healthier, longer lifespan. Even small changes can make a positive difference. The South Australian Business Chamber’s Healthy Worker Advisor, Kylie Cocks, says there are several advantages to an active lifestyle:

  1. Fitness can improve productivity – studies have confirmed that increased blood pressure and flow as a result of exercise increases oxygen flow to the brain, which improves performance
  2. Fitness can cultivate a positive mindset – physical activity stimulates feel-good hormones dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin, which regulate mood to help you feel happier and less anxious
  3. Fitness can improve immunity – regular exercise is shown to boost your immune system to help defend against infection. This will reduce your number of sick days and lessen your chances of developing cancer, heart disease and type two diabetes

It is recommended the average adult takes part in two to five hours of physical activity per week to maintain healthy fitness levels. Every session counts, whether it’s 15 minutes or an entire hour. Below are some ways to incorporate exercise into your daily routine:

  • Transform your commute into a work-out by walking, running or cycling to the office
  • Go for a walk or take part in a fitness class during your lunch break
  • Take short active breaks’ throughout the day by taking a quick walk around the block or by walking up and down the stairs
  • Stretch while waiting at the office printer

When it comes to exercising, finding an activity you enjoy is essential. When you’re having fun with your work-out it will become easier to incorporate into your daily routine. Enjoy!
