On 17 November 2022 the State Government introduced a bill which aims to change current legislation to better protect the rights of domestic violence victim-survivors. If passed, this Bill will prohibit discrimination against someone who has been or is currently subject to domestic violence for the purpose of employment, accommodation and provision of goods and services.
One of the behaviours prohibited under this proposed Bill is criticising or otherwise poorly treating an employee because they need to take time off for domestic violence leave. This amendment goes hand in hand with the recent changes to the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) which allow all employees 10 days of paid domestic, or family violence leave each year, rather than the previous 5 days unpaid.
