The South Australian Business Chamber Today — Thursday 4 November, 2021
It takes a very disciplined approach to succeed when taking a new business from ideation to creation. When the South Australian Business Chamber Chief Executive Martin Haese reflects on the challenges and success as a young entrepreneur, he realises he learnt it all ‘on the tools’. No one was there to teach him how it all worked.
“I needed a program like SAYES or Encore, that not only provides the technical knowledge of strategy and business planning, but includes mentorship. Not just people to have a pleasant conversation with, but mentors will seriously challenge your thinking and planning.
SAYES and Encore are two leading entrepreneurial programs run out of the South Australian Business Chamber with mentors who do exactly what Martin said was missing for him. Successful Encore graduate Kate Campbell can’t speak more highly of the program, crediting it with helping her work ‘on’ the business rather than ‘in’ it all the time.
“Making the time to work on a new business plan was also extremely valuable and something I wouldn’t have made the time for or executed as well without the structure of the course and the advice from the presenters.
Kate recognises the challenges that her age group faces when considering entrepreneurial life.
“Often, at this stage of life, the stakes are higher, for example, mortgage, family and other responsibilities and obligations. However, with life experience and maturity, you are better positioned to take risks in a more calculated considered way and achieve your goals more efficiently.
“It’s a great time of your life to dive in and give it a go — what have you got to lose? The worst that can happen is that your business idea isn’t as good as you thought, and you return to your 9 – 5 job.
“You won’t know unless you give it a go, and if you’re prepared to put in the hard work, grit and touch of madness, then your halfway there!
