The Human Touch - A South Australian Business Chamber Discussion Paper On The Human Services Sector

The Human Services Sector Is The Largest Growing Employment Sector In South Australia, And It’s Forecast To Grow By Close To 15 Per Cent Over The Next Five Years – And It Already Employs More Than 45,000 People In The Not-For-Profit Sector In Our State.

The Sector Contributes 9.4 Per Cent To Our Gross State Product, Which Is More Than Manufacturing, Agriculture Or Construction.

The South Australian Business Chamber Believes The Human Services Sector’s Importance To The South Australian Economy Is Being Underestimated. For That Reason, the South Australian Business Chamber Is Tomorrow Launching Its Third Discussion Paper, Human Touch, Outlining The Human Services Sector’s Diversity, Growth Opportunities And Impact On The State’s Economy.

The South Australian Business Chamber Chief Executive Martin Haese said the discussion paper included updates of the human services sector impacts, information on the NDIS and the aged care industry, innovative practices and case studies.

We tend to focus on our most vulnerable people when we consider the human services sector, we often forget that it’s South Australia’s largest employment growth industry,” Mr Haese said.

Human services cover a diverse range of industries including health, aged care, community, disability, education services, social housing and prisons, delivered by the private and public sectors. It provides support for people who are vulnerable, with professionals helping people navigate through health challenges or chronic situations.

As an organisation which aims to help businesses grow, the South Australian Business Chamber thinks the sector should be at the forefront during discussions with school leavers, career-changers or even entrepreneurs using technology to improve workplace practices. Opportunities are endless.”

The paper also tells the stories of people who work in the industry, including a carer in his early 20s who works with autistic children to meet their social and health needs, such as trips to watch the AFL, an NDIS plan management business owner, a marketing and fundraising manager in the not-for-profit sector and home care business manager.

Human Touch will be launched at a morning tea at the South Australian Business Chamber on Greenhill Road at 10am tomorrow, Thursday 15 August.
