SAYES is a 12-month government-funded program which works with industry mentors who help participants with a business idea gain an understanding of the fundamentals, and instil the confidence to bring their ideas to life.
Mr Rodger started The Seller Door after taking part in SAYES. The program helped him create a business plan, network with like-minded peers and grow his company. He also won the Business Growth Award, recognising future development projections.
The Seller Door showcases South Australian small batch producers at a market and café on Jetty Road, Brighton. It boasts more than 100 independent brands within its market which are used to “hero” café dishes, giving patrons a taste of SA. Mr Rodger now employs 21 staff.
“Participating in SAYES gave me the confidence to take the leap,” Mr Rodger said. “Before starting the course I worked in the corporate world with dreams of starting my own business… SAYES gave me the structure and support I needed to make it all happen.”
The South Australian Business Chamber Manager Learning Solutions Kerry Sutton said the SAYES contribution to the state’s economic development could never be underestimated, with the list of the program’s success stories increasing year by year.
“The graduation celebrates the achievement of SAYES participants, its mentors, workshop presenters, sponsors and supporters who help ensure South Australian young entrepreneurs are given the best possible chance of success,” Ms Sutton said.
“Tom Rodger, a high calibre SAYES graduate, is a fine example of a young South Australian entrepreneur. We look forward to following The Seller Door’s journey.”
Fresh Front’s Martin Wilson last night won the Business Plan of the Year Award, and Anne McCutcheon was announced as the RDA Adelaide Mentor of the Year.
Ms McCutcheon has been a mentor and workshop presenter since 2008. She has had a career in community, business and economic development. One mentee described Ms McCutcheon as being “the complete package”.
“(Anne had) an accurate understanding of what I am about, decisive and applicable solutions for my current and future dilemmas, patience, and a real interest in me succeeding,” she said.
Mr Wilson, who was recognised for his business planning skills, runs a company which improves streetscapes through professional cleaning. A panel of mentors found Mr Wilson’s business plan was one of the best they had ever seen.
