“Any certainty at this point is welcome and today’s announcement on borders is a big boost for the economy, although the hospitality sector faces no reprieve on restrictions until Christmas at best.” says the South Australian Business Chamber Chief Martin Haese.
Many businesses will be pleased to know that arrivals into our state for those double vaccinated will either have reduced or no quarantine time from 23 November, setting a path for boosting a much-needed skilled workforce in time for summer along with the return of international students.
“Borders reopening inevitably means allowing COVID-19 into our community. We expect South Australia allowing the virus in within the next month will be the motivation needed for unvaccinated individuals to roll up their sleeves.”
Unfortunately, today’s announcement however provides little relief for the hospitality sector in the leadup to what’s supposed to be their busiest time of the year.
“With the removal of remaining restrictions not scheduled until South Australia hits 90 per cent double vaccination, which at best might be Christmas, many hospitality businesses are concerned they will not recover from pandemic losses over the December period as expected”.
The SA Health COVID-Ready Plan released today suggests that even with 90 per cent vaccination, high risk activities such as nightclubs and standing alcohol consumption will only be available for people who are fully vaccinated.
“In this scenario, workplaces will have to force their staff to be vaccinated to comply with this rule, which will in effect be the same as an unofficial government mandate”.
“We are concerned that without a government enforced mandatory vaccination program in place for certain industries, a 90 per cent double dose rate may be too ambitious for South Australia to achieve in a timely manner.” said Mr Haese.
The South Australian Business Chamber is seeking further clarity on today’s roadmap, including how vaccination rules will work for hospitality and additionally how that impacts whether businesses are shut down in the event of an outbreak.
The South Australian Business Chamber recently undertook a comprehensive survey of its members regarding workplace vaccination, open borders and the current level of restrictions which is expected to be released next week.
